Two Hosts, One Room, and a Constant Fight Between Mic Bleed and Natural Conversation

Setting up a two-host podcast recorded in the same room, each with their own mic, ran into the same problem almost immediately, each mic picked up a meaningful amount of the other host's voice, sometimes making it sound like a faint, phasey double of what the primary mic already captured cleanly.

Standard noise gating broke the natural rhythm

Gating each mic aggressively enough to fully eliminate bleed from the other host also clipped off the ends of words and made quick back-and-forth exchanges sound choppy, since real conversation often has hosts talking over each other briefly in completely normal, natural ways.

Physical distance and mic choice mattered more than any plugin

Increasing the physical distance between the two mic positions and switching to more directional cardioid mics pointed away from each other reduced the raw amount of bleed captured in the first place, which turned out to matter far more than anything applied afterward in editing.

A gentler, frequency-aware gate instead of a hard cutoff

Rather than a standard gate that fully opens or closes, using a gate with a soft knee and a moderate reduction amount, say 15-20dB rather than complete silence, tamed the bleed enough to sound clean without creating the harsh on/off artifacts of a full cutoff during natural overlapping speech.

EQ carving created separation without gating at all

Since bleed is essentially each host's voice colored by the acoustics of traveling to the wrong mic, applying a subtle EQ cut on each channel at frequencies where that particular bleed was most audible, informed by ear rather than a fixed formula, reduced the sense of a phasey double without touching the primary voice at all.

Panning the two channels slightly apart helped the ear separate them

Even a small amount of stereo separation between the two hosts, rather than keeping both dead center, made the bleed less perceptually confusing, since listeners could more easily attribute which voice belonged in which channel even when some bleed remained.

Perfect isolation wasn't actually the goal

After a lot of tuning, some amount of bleed turned out to be acceptable and even natural sounding, the same way sitting across from someone in real life means hearing them from slightly different angles isn't inherently a problem. Chasing complete isolation was solving a problem that didn't need to be fully solved, just managed enough to stop being distracting.
