Why Your Mix Sounds Quieter the Moment You Upload It

After finishing a mix that sounded punchy and loud on my local speakers, I'd upload it and it would somehow blend right into the same volume level as everything else on the platform. At first I assumed it was an encoding issue and tried adjusting a bunch of export settings, but the real cause was somewhere else entirely.

Most platforms normalize loudness automatically

Many streaming and sharing platforms adjust the loudness of uploaded audio or video to match their own internal target. If your original mix is significantly louder than that target, the platform quietly turns it down on playback. That's why a mix that sounded big and impactful locally ended up sounding about the same as everything else once it hit the platform.

Mixing louder was actually working against me

Before I understood this, I kept pushing compression and limiting harder to make things sound bigger, only for the platform to pull it right back down, losing dynamics for basically no gain in perceived loudness. In some cases the result was actually worse than a mix with more natural dynamics.

Matching the target loudness ahead of time

Now I finish the mix, then normalize it to whatever loudness target the platform recommends before uploading. Knowing the platform is going to pull it down anyway, matching that target up front makes the final playback far more predictable, and preserves more of the dynamics.

Different platforms use different targets

Video platforms and audio streaming platforms don't use the same loudness standard, and even a single platform's policy can change over time. Rather than setting this once and forgetting it, I make a habit of periodically re-checking my output against current targets.

Dynamic range management matters more than peak level now

Once I accepted that loudness gets renormalized anyway, my mixing philosophy shifted away from making things as loud as possible and toward preserving the relationship between quiet and loud moments within the mix. Mixes built this way consistently sounded more natural and impactful even after passing through platform normalization.

The final listening environment has to be part of the mix

Understanding that what I hear loud on my own speakers and what a viewer actually hears through a platform are two different things changed how I approach mixing from the start. I now simulate the platform's loudness target before finalizing anything, and make the last call based on that.
