Two Ways to Raise Volume: Why Normalizing and Compression Are Not the Same Tool
When I was learning to edit, my process was simple: if something sounded quiet, I'd normalize it, and if that wasn't enough, I'd throw a compressor on top. The results were inconsistent every time, and it took a while before I actually understood that these two tools operate on completely different principles.
Normalizing just scales the whole file up
Normalizing finds the loudest peak in a file and raises the entire file by a fixed amount so that peak hits a target level, say -1dB. It doesn't touch the relationship between loud and quiet moments at all. So if there's even one sharp transient spike somewhere in the clip, everything else stays quiet relative to that spike, no matter how many times you normalize.
Compression actually narrows the gap
A compressor, on the other hand, only acts on sound above a threshold you set, pulling those louder moments down and shrinking the distance between the loud and quiet parts. Once that dynamic range is narrowed, pushing the overall volume up afterward gets you something that sounds consistently loud in a way normalizing alone never could.
Why normalizing alone kept falling short
A sound effect with one brief transient peak would get normalized around that spike, leaving the body of the sound still quiet. Before I understood this, I'd re-normalize the same file over and over wondering why it never got as loud as I wanted. Once I understood the mechanism, it made complete sense.
Order matters when you use both
Now I compress first to tighten the gap between peaks and average level, then normalize afterward to bring the whole thing up to a target loudness. Doing it in the reverse order means the compressor ends up squashing something normalizing already pushed to its ceiling, and the results become unpredictable.
The downside of overdoing it
Push the compression ratio too hard and the sound loses its life, flattening out. This is especially noticeable on impact-heavy effects, where excessive compression actually weakens the punch instead of strengthening it. I typically stay in the 3:1 to 6:1 range depending on the character of the sound.
They turned out to be tools with different jobs
Normalizing is a finishing step for a sound whose dynamics are already sorted out. Compression is closer to a shaping tool that changes the relationships inside the sound itself. Once I separated those two roles in my head, it became much clearer which knob to reach for when volume wasn't behaving.
