Digitizing an Old Home Video Meant Fighting a Hum That Wasn't There During the Original Recording
Digitizing a box of old home video tapes to preserve family footage, the picture quality issues were expected, but the audio turned out to be a bigger challenge than anticipated. Underneath the original voices and background sound sat a persistent low hum that clearly wasn't part of the original recording.
The hum came from playback, not the original tape
Testing the same tape on a couple of different playback decks showed the hum changed character depending on the equipment, which meant at least part of it was being introduced during the transfer process itself, from electrical interference and aging playback heads, rather than being baked permanently into the tape.
A cleaner playback chain fixed more than any plugin could after the fact
Using a better-shielded cable, moving the playback deck away from other electronics, and trying a different power source reduced the hum significantly before any digital processing was even applied. Getting a cleaner source recording mattered far more than trying to remove a heavier hum afterward.
Spectral repair tools worked, but needed a light touch
For the hum that remained baked into the original tape itself, using a noise reduction tool trained on a hum-only sample from a quiet section of the tape removed most of it, but pushing the reduction too aggressively introduced a warbly, underwater quality to voices that was worse than the original hum.
Old tape audio has a narrower usable frequency range than modern recordings
Consumer video tape from that era simply didn't capture as wide a frequency range as modern digital audio, so aggressively boosting high or low frequencies to "improve" the sound mostly amplified noise that lived in those same ranges rather than genuinely enhancing anything, since the useful information was never there to begin with.
Dialogue clarity mattered more than full-range restoration
Given the source limitations, the realistic goal shifted from making the audio sound modern to simply making the dialogue as intelligible as possible, prioritizing a narrower mid-range boost focused on speech clarity over any attempt at wideband enhancement that the original recording couldn't support anyway.
Some imperfection was worth preserving
After cleaning up the worst of the hum and boosting dialogue clarity, leaving a small amount of the original tape hiss intact actually felt right, both to match the era the footage was from and because pushing for a fully clean, modern-sounding result on old home footage started to feel like it was erasing part of what made the recording feel authentic in the first place.
