A Live Performance Recording That Sounded Muddy Had Nothing Wrong With the Mics
Recording a live performance in a mid-sized room, the raw files sounded surprisingly murky considering how carefully the mics had been placed and how clean the signal chain was. Every individual element seemed fine in isolation, but together the mix felt washed out in a way that was hard to pin down at first.
Reflections were arriving close enough to blur transients
The room had several hard, parallel surfaces that were sending reflections back to the mics only a few milliseconds after the direct sound. Reflections that arrive too close in time to the original sound don't register as distinct echoes, they just blur and smear the attack of each note instead.
Distinguishing early reflections from natural room tone
Not all room sound was the problem. The later, more diffuse reflections were actually contributing a pleasant sense of space. It was specifically the early, close reflections bouncing off nearby hard surfaces that were causing the smearing, which meant the fix needed to target a narrow time window rather than reducing room sound across the board.
A gate on the early reflection window, not a blanket dry-out
Rather than trying to remove room sound entirely, which would have killed the natural ambience that made the recording feel live in the first place, targeting just that early reflection window with careful gating and some absorption placement before the next recording preserved the space while clearing up the smearing.
Mic placement changes had more impact than plugins
Pulling mics a bit further from the reflective surfaces and angling them slightly away from the hardest walls reduced how much of that early reflection ever made it into the recording in the first place. This ended up mattering more than any amount of post-processing applied afterward.
Multitrack isolation revealed which sources were most affected
Going track by track through the multitrack session showed that percussion and anything with a sharp attack suffered the most from this issue, while sustained instruments were barely affected. That meant the cleanup effort could be focused where it actually mattered instead of applying the same treatment everywhere.
The room was part of the recording chain all along
It's easy to think about a recording chain as mic, preamp, and converter, but the room itself is functioning as part of that chain whether it's accounted for or not. Understanding what specifically about the room was causing the murkiness, rather than reaching for a generic dereverb tool, led to a cleaner and more natural sounding fix.
