Eating Sounds in Mukbang Content Get Harsh in a Very Specific Frequency Range
Mukbang and ASMR-style eating content depends almost entirely on how the audio feels, since the sound essentially is the content. Editing a few of these clips, I kept running into moments where certain bites sounded fine on set but turned uncomfortably harsh once the mic was placed close and the gain pushed up, and it took some digging to understand why.
Crunchy and wet sounds live in overlapping but different ranges
Crisp, crunchy foods tend to produce sharp energy in the upper-mid to high range, while wetter chewing sounds carry more low-mid resonance. Close-miking picks up both in far more detail than casual listening ever would, and pushing the gain to capture enough volume also pushes whichever range is dominant into uncomfortable territory.
A narrow harsh band shows up consistently
Across different foods and different mic setups, a narrow band roughly in the 2 to 4kHz range kept showing up as the source of that harsh, almost piercing quality in crunchy bites. This overlaps with the same range where sibilance in speech tends to live, so it makes sense that overly forward energy there reads as unpleasant to the ear.
A gentle dynamic cut works better than a static one
Applying a constant EQ cut to that range flattened out the satisfying crunch entirely, which defeats the purpose of this kind of content. Using a dynamic EQ or a narrow-band compressor that only reacts when that frequency range gets too loud let the crunch stay present most of the time while taming only the harshest peaks.
Chewing and swallowing sounds need separate treatment
Sharp bite and crunch moments needed that narrow dynamic taming, but the lower, wetter sounds of chewing and swallowing responded better to a gentle low-mid reduction instead, since that's where they tended to build up an uncomfortable thickness over a long clip rather than a single harsh peak.
Close-mic placement changes the whole equation
Moving the mic even a few centimeters farther back reduced how aggressively these frequencies built up in the first place, sometimes more effectively than any amount of EQ afterward. Getting the mic distance right before recording saved a lot of corrective work later, though for content that specifically wants an extreme close, intimate feel, the EQ approach becomes more necessary.
The goal is comfortable, not clean
It's tempting to treat these sounds like any other audio problem and clean them up completely, but doing that strips away exactly what makes this content work. The real target is keeping the texture people came for while pulling back just enough that long viewing sessions stay comfortable instead of fatiguing.
